Injury forces Emil Bergholt into European Championship exit

By Nicklas Thygesen

The European Championship final tournament is over for Emil Bergholt.

An overuse injury in his foot means that Friday's European Championship semifinal and Sunday's medal matches will be without the Skjern captain's participation.

– I am incredibly disappointed and frustrated to miss the decisive matches. It has been an amazing experience so far, and therefore it hurts to have to say goodbye at this point. Now it's about supporting my teammates so we can stand with the gold around our necks on Sunday, says Emil Bergholt.

- The timing is really bad, and the injury means that I will also miss the upcoming matches in the Skjern jersey, which annoys me enormously, says the national team centre back.

Physiotherapist at Skjern Handball, Hans Jensen, puts words here on the centre back player's foot injury.

⁃ Today's scan showed an overuse reaction in one of the metatarsal bones. To ensure optimal healing Emil will offload the foot and use crutches for a short period. It is a stable injury with a good prognosis, and the course will be continuously assessed by the club's medical staff. It is still too early to give a time perspective on when Emil will be back at full strength in the green jersey, says Hans Jensen.
